Confessions of a KPIholic: sustainability metrics aren’t that different

“Hi, I’m Anna, and I’m a KPIholic” 🤓 Jokes aside, I still have flashbacks of nights spent dreaming up Excel formulas to solve every kind of problem🫣

Years of leading continuous improvement projects in operations taught me to love data that drives decisions. That’s what led me to Sustainability Management Accounting, and to the global reporting standards and frameworks.

My soft spot for frameworks? I promise it’s not about reporting. It’s because I believe they bring clarity and trust to sustainability information, in the same way financial accounting standards set the rules and the common language for steering a business financially.

Which brings me to week 4 of the series of IFRS sustainability standards S1 and S2 pillars: Metrics & Targets 🎯 This one is more familiar than it looks.

You already run your business on numbers: cost per unit, energy use, downtime, on-time delivery. You track them, review them and act on them. Targets work the same way. Every business sets growth targets.

Sustainability metrics and targets aren’t that different. The main differences are that some figures rely on estimates, the financial impact is often indirect or felt later, and standards and frameworks tell you how to measure and set them:

✅ The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) sets out how to calculate Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

✅ SASB Standards sets out the metrics that matter most in your industry.

✅ Science Based Targets initiative gives you a science-based way to set targets, so they’re ambitious enough, credible, comparable and tied to where the business is heading.

You don’t have to make up the method. It already exists. It takes some new expertise, but no new way of managing. And where the data isn’t there yet, estimates and assumptions are fine, as long as they’re justified and transparent.

Perfect data isn’t the starting point. Progress is🙌🏻
